An immigrant who fled Soviet-occupied Lithuania in 1944, Jonas Dovydenas became an astute observer of Chicago’s diverse ethnic communities and the public displays of their identities—including festivals and events such as the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. This image was taken in front of Louis Sullivan’s Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Building, located at the corner of State and Madison Streets in Chicago’s Loop. It depicts some of the 350,000 Chicagoans who gathered on a balmy 73-degree afternoon in March 1966 to watch as Mayor Richard J. Daley led the parade down State Street. Dovydenas continued his involvement with the city throughout the 1970s, working with the American Folklife Center on a broad survey of Chicago’s cultural groups.
