Sol LeWitt is an American artist whose work established conceptual and minimalist art as major forces in the latter half of the twentieth century. He is best known for his wall drawings and three-dimensional structures, in which the governing idea or instruction set constitutes the artwork itself, with execution delegated to others. His geometric forms, rendered in graphite, ink, and acrylic across institutional walls worldwide, were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others. The separation of conception from fabrication remains the defining principle of his practice.
