Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen) was a Finnish painter and illustrator whose graphite drawings and paintings depicted hypermasculine male figures in homoerotic scenarios with anatomical precision and unapologetic directness. Working from the 1950s onward, his work became foundational to gay visual culture during an era when such imagery remained illegal or censored in most Western countries. His drawings combined technical draftsmanship with a deliberate rejection of artistic restraint, establishing an iconography that influenced subsequent generations of queer artists and photographers.
