Sophie Ristelhueber is a French artist working primarily in photography and film to document the traces of conflict and infrastructure on landscape and the built environment. Since the 1980s, her practice has examined war zones, industrial sites, and urban transformation through a formal, methodical approach that treats devastation and construction as material subjects rather than narrative spectacles. Her photographs of Kuwait after the 1991 Gulf War and of the French suburbs establish a visual language centered on surfaces, patterns, and the accumulated marks of human intervention. Ristelhueber's work resists conventional documentary framing, instead treating geopolitical rupture as a formal and spatial problem.
