Noah Purifoy was an American assemblage artist who constructed large-scale sculptures from discarded materials and urban detritus collected in Los Angeles. Working primarily from the 1960s onward, he transformed found wood, metal, glass, and refuse into monumental forms that engaged with themes of waste, entropy, and social displacement. His practice emerged from the postwar culture of consumption and the material landscape of South Central Los Angeles, where he was based. Purifoy's work anticipated later ecological and institutional critiques of material value and artistic legitimacy.
