Billy Apple is a New Zealand-born artist whose practice spans pop art, conceptual art, and brand identity, treating his own name and body as readymade material. Born Barrie Bates, he legally changed his name and bleached his hair in the early 1960s, remaking himself as a living artwork. His transactions, bodily processes, and corporate-style self-branding have been the subject of exhibitions at the Auckland Art Gallery.
