Markus Lüpertz is a German painter and sculptor born in 1941 who emerged as a central figure in postwar European abstraction. Working primarily in oil and bronze, his approach combines gestural abstraction with mythological and classical references, creating a visual language that resists pure non-objectivity. His large-scale canvases and monumental bronze forms have established him as a major voice in the renewal of figurative and symbolic content within modernism.
