Why this artist matters now
Alan Fletcher (1931, 2006) was a British graphic designer and typographer whose work fundamentally shaped postwar visual communication. A founding partner of the design consultancy Pentagram, Fletcher developed a practice spanning corporate identity, poster design, and experimental typography that balanced modernist rigor with wit and visual playfulness. His approach to problem-solving, often combining unexpected materials, photographic collage, and hand-drawn letterforms, established a model of design as conceptual rather than purely decorative. His influence extends across advertising, publishing, and institutional branding throughout the latter half of the twentieth century.
