Why this artist matters now

Astrid Sampe was a Swedish textile designer whose printed and woven cottons and linens defined postwar Scandinavian modernism. Working with geometric and organic patterns rendered in bold, saturated colors, she developed a visual language that rejected both functionalist austerity and decorative excess, establishing a model for democratic industrial design. Her fabrics retained a craftsman's rigor despite mass production, influencing generations of designers across Northern Europe.
