About
Why this artist matters now
Charles Codman was an American painter of the early 19th century whose work participated in the Romantic movement then emerging in American art. Active primarily in Boston, he worked in oil on canvas, creating landscapes and historical subjects that reflected the period's interest in dramatic light and emotional intensity. His paintings were included in MoMA's landmark 1943 exhibition Romantic Painting in America, establishing his place in the formative years of American Romanticism. Little documentary material survives from his brief career, which ended with his death at age 42.
