About

Why this artist matters now

Craig Kauffman was an American artist working in acrylic, vacuum-formed plastic, and painted aluminum from the 1950s onward. His luminous, translucent wall-mounted reliefs pioneered the use of industrial materials and light-based color in sculpture during the postwar period. Operating from Los Angeles, Kauffman treated plastic and metal as vehicles for chromatic expression rather than structural statement, creating works that dematerialized their own surfaces through carefully calibrated hues and reflective finishes. His practice bridged the concerns of Color Field painting with sculptural form.
