<p>This print is part of a series called Impromptu, in which Onchi Kōshirō explored how chance affected his compositions. Most of the works in this group feature an impression of a string that was dipped in pigment and then allowed to fall naturally. Here, the string was the last element to be printed and was not part of his original design.</p>

Kōshirō Onchi , who is also known as Onchi Kōshirō was Tokyo-born Japanese artist who is best known for his prints. He was the father of the sōsaku-hanga movement in twentieth-century Japan, and a photographer. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics.
