Tennessee’s Only Frank Lloyd Wright House Hits the Market

The only house in the entire state of Tennessee that was designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright has quietly hit the market for the first time in over 75 years. Known as the Shavin House, the home was commissioned in 1949 by Seamour and Gerte Shavin, and has remained in the care of the original family up until this point, according to Alliance Sotheby’s, which has the listing.
“This is not simply a homecoming to market,” said Sandy Poe, the listing broker. “The Shavin House is a living work of art—one of the finest examples of Usonian architecture in the country. To have the opportunity to introduce it to the world for the first time is a profound privilege.”
Listed at $1.6 million, 334 North Crest Road is located in Chattanooga’s historic Missionary Ridge, and features three bedrooms, two full and two half baths. Set on just shy of an acre of property, the home offers sweeping views of the Tennessee River and Lookout Mountain.
The family has taken careful measures to preserve the original elements, which include Tennessee Crab Orchard stone and textured Louisiana cypress. Massive windows allow in natural light in, while a hidden entrance and a pond designed for the property nod to Wright’s core ethos.
Over the course of his 70-year career, Wright designed over 1,000 structures, and while not all were realized, his impact on American architecture is everlasting. The Shavin House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
